FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a socio-political self-determination organization established to advocate for the restoration of an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria. It operates through widespread grassroots support, media broadcasts, and diaspora chapters worldwide.

IPOB’s stated core objective is securing self-determination for the indigenous populations of the Biafran region through a United Nations-supervised referendum, enabling residents to vote democratically on whether to remain within Nigeria or establish a sovereign Biafran state.

The Directorate of State (DOS) serves as the primary executive and administrative cabinet of the movement. Headed operationally by Mazi Chika Edoziem, the DOS oversees policy implementation, international diplomatic initiatives, global chapter administrative alignment, and official public statements.

While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu established the organization as its Supreme Leader, practical daily administration has transitioned into collective governance under the Directorate of State (DOS). Individual executive positions, including the traditional office of supreme leadership, have undergone administrative restructuring and suspension during ongoing leadership transitions.

Mazi Chika Edoziem serves as the Head of the Directorate of State (HDOS). In this capacity, he manages executive leadership, signs institutional directives, and steers strategic operations.

Radio Biafra serves as the central broadcasting and mass communications channel for the movement. Launched as an online and shortwave radio network, it functions as a primary tool for disseminating institutional directives, news, public mobilization messages, and political commentary to listeners worldwide.

Institutionalization represents the transition of IPOB from an individual-centric movement into a structured, rules-based institution. It establishes clear administrative departments, formal codes of conduct, and collective decision-making bodies that function independently of any single personality.

To protect the movement against decapitation, internal division, and state sabotage. When movements rely entirely on individual figures, the arrest, silencing, or compromise of an individual can stall the entire struggle. Institutionalization guarantees continuity and stability under any circumstance.

No. While the Igbo constitute a significant demographic, Biafra encompasses all indigenous ethnic nationalities within the historical territory of the eastern and coastal regions of the Niger delta and adjoining uplands.

Indigenous Biafrans and allies can join recognized, registered national and regional chapters in their respective jurisdictions, support ongoing international legal and diplomatic advocacy, and participate in verified public campaigns adhering strictly to the official code of conduct.

The Eastern Security Network (ESN) was established in December 2020 by IPOB leadership as a regional security vigilance group. Its stated mandate is protecting rural farmlands and forested territories in southeastern Nigeria against violent clashes with unauthorized armed groups and foreign pastoralists.

Mainstream IPOB initially instituted a Monday “sit-at-home” civil action in August 2021 to protest the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but formally suspended routine weekly directives shortly thereafter due to severe regional economic strain. Official policy limits civil actions only to specific landmark days, explicitly disowning indefinite or prolonged enforcement.

The mainstream IPOB apparatus under the DOS functions independently of the “Biafra Republic Government in Exile” (BRGIE) and other diaspora offshoots. The central DOS has consistently disavowed unapproved actions, parallel governments, and unauthorized sit-at-home declarations issued by outside factions.

IPOB maintains a decentralized structure consisting of national coordinators, zonal coordinators, and family units across numerous countries in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. These diaspora chapters coordinate legal defense funds, peaceful demonstrations, humanitarian advocacy, and engagement with foreign parliamentary bodies.

To ensure organizational survival and guard against operational decapitation, the movement transitioned away from sole-custodian executive dependency. Suspending traditional single-leader authority distributes executive responsibility across a collective council, guaranteeing that operations continue uninterrupted regardless of the arrest or detention of individual figures.

In September 2017, the Nigerian Federal High Court designated IPOB as a proscribed terrorist group under domestic terrorism prevention laws—a classification that IPOB’s legal team continues to challenge in domestic and regional appeals courts. Internationally (including in the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union), IPOB is not designated as a foreign terrorist organization, operating legal advocacy and political chapters abroad.

  • Long-Term Sustainability: The struggle does not collapse when individuals face detention, censorship, or persecution.
  • Diplomatic Credibility: Foreign governments, the United Nations, and international bodies engage with accountable institutions, formal secretariats, and recognized representatives rather than volatile informal networks.
  • Internal Accountability: A structured command and dispute-resolution system protects members and communities from unauthorized rogue directives, extortion, or rogue enforcement.
  • Blueprint for Future Governance: Developing functional departments (legal, diplomatic, administrative, informational) serves as an operational prototype for future democratic governance in Biafra.

The primary goal is the restoration of an independent Biafran nation achieved via a democratic, internationally observed referendum that allows indigenous people to exercise self-determination peacefully.

Decisions follow a collaborative, department-level review process. Strategic, legal, diplomatic, and mobilization directorates deliberate before the DOS issues official communiqués, ensuring every action reflects long-term policy rather than impulsive reactions.
